Miró – I work like a gardener was shown to the Danish public at ARKEN in 2010. The exhibition takes its point of departure in the world view underlying the Spanish-Catalan artist's own statement, ”I work like a gardener.” Joan Miró (1893-1983) saw the world as living and organic. He believed that art is born when the artist is sensitive to the forces immanent in the material. Focusing on the late Miró, this exhibition presents works from the period when Miró was mainly active in his new studio in Mallorca and was principally concerned with sculpture. During these years he constructed a large number of assemblages of objets trouvés from his immediate environment, such as worn-out objects and tools, stones and branches from Mallorca and the region around Barcelona. These assemblages were later cast in bronze. The exhibition comprises 109 works lent by the Fondation Marguerite et Aimé Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in Southern France, which has one of the largest Miró collections in the world, and the largest collection of his sculptures. In addition, two works have been lent to ARKEN from the private collection of the Maeght family, and three works from the collection of the Henie Onstad Art Centre will be shown at both venues. ARKEN is very pleased to be able to include in this catalogue the article "Miró’s Garden of the World", by the postdoctoral scholar Peter Borum. With reference to German and especially French philosophy, Borum’s article compares Miró's work to that of a gardener who sees a multitude of possibilities in his terrain, as Miró does in the materials of his art.
